Capital region’s largest cycling organization endorses push for mandatory truck sideguards spearheaded by NDP Transport Critic Olivia Chow. The advocacy group is urging Minister Lebel to take action in an open letter.
The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition with its more than 1,000 members as well as its provincial umbrella organization, the BC Cycling Coalition, have both endorsed Olivia Chow’s push for mandatory sideguards on trucks. The advocacy groups both recognize the life-saving value for cyclists and pedestrians alike, urging Transport Minister Lebel to act immediately and get Canada up to par with other Western countries in road safety.
In the light of this tragedy it is clear that your ministry has to take action now. I am joined in my call by Jenna’s friends and family as well as by Karen MacNeil Hartmann, Megan Holtz and Jeanette Holman-Price – all of them lost loved ones in grievous accidents involving heavy trucks.
Our citizens deserve a Federal Government that takes action and protects the lives of pedestrians and cyclists. Now is the time to stop the tragic loss of lives on our roads. All it takes is political will.
