Toronto

Our citizens deserve a Federal Government that takes action and protects the lives of pedestrians and cyclists. Now is the time to stop the tragic loss of lives on our roads. All it takes is political will.

September 30, 2011 OTTAWA – Study after study shows: Canada is falling behind when it comes to public transit. Municipalities and provinces are facing an ever-widening funding gap – not only for keeping up with growing urban populations but also in terms of simply maintaining the transit infrastructure that’s already in place. Olivia has taken [...]

Olivia Chow’s speech in the House of Commons Ms. Olivia Chow (Trinity—Spadina, NDP): Madam Speaker, five months ago the Prime Minister of the Conservative government appointed the president and CEO of Canada Post. He gives the president CEO a half million dollar salary and a 33% bonus so that means he earns three-quarters of a [...]

Olivia’s question in the House of Commons, June 22, 2011  Ms. Olivia Chow (Trinity—Spadina, NDP): Mr. Speaker, Canada’s bridges are falling down and the minister responsible is falling down on the job.      Four times in the last six months the basketball-sized chunks of concrete are falling down from Montreal’s bridges near Champlain and Mercier, [...]

Alongside other Toronto New Democrat MPs, I will continue to call on the government to hold an independent, public inquiry into the events surrounding last Summer’s G20 Summit in Toronto, and to take action to ensure fair compensation for the small businesses impacted thereby. Read the Toronto Star article here.

Ms. Olivia Chow (Trinity—Spadina, NDP): Mr. Speaker, in the 1990s, the federal deficit was downloaded onto the backs of Canadian communities. Twenty years later, Canadians are stuck in traffic, our bridges are crumbling, our water systems are failing. Friday’s throne speech ignored municipalities and infrastructure completely. Canadians deserve a vision, a national public transit strategy. [...]

Ms. Olivia Chow (Trinity—Spadina, NDP): Mr. Speaker, today’s G20 report shows that Canadians are still traumatized by what happened and are still looking for answers.      To date no one has stepped forward to claimed responsibility for the massive assault on people’s right to free speech and to freely assembly. No one has been held accountable.  [...]

As the city of Toronto comes to grips with transit service cutbacks, Federal New Democrats are proposing legislation to help communities deal with the costs of public transportation. The National Public Transit Strategy Act would coordinate between all levels of government to maintain and expand public transportation across the country.

Mr. Speaker, during the G20, innocent local residents were trapped by martial law. At the corner of Spadina and Queen, they were huddled in the pouring rain and humiliated for hours.

Hundreds and hundreds of people were arrested and detained in horrifying conditions only to have their charges dropped. The people of Toronto need to know what happened.

How did it go so wrong? Why will the government not call a full public inquiry? Why are Conservatives afraid of the truth?

Dear Minister Strahl,

I am writing to urge you not to waste precious taxpayer dollars which have been designated for transit riders in Toronto. The province has already spent $130 million on Transit City and signed $1.3 billion in contracts.

December 3, 2010 That, in the opinion of the House: (a) Maclean’s November 2010 article entitled “Too Asian?” is offensive, divisive and suggests Canadian students of Asian heritage may be limiting opportunities for non-Asians at certain Canadian universities; and (b) Maclean’s should issue a comprehensive and unqualified public apology to Asian Canadians regarding the article.
