New Democrats Hold Harper Conservatives to Account and Continue to Work Hard for Canadian Families May 2, 2012 OTTAWA – A year after the 2011 election, my New Democrat colleagues and I continue to stand up for Canadians every day as the Official Opposition. Pushing back against unjust cuts, unethical behaviour, government inaction and Conservative mismanagment, [...]
Health
Just as the birth of a baby receives comprehensive care and support from the community and the government, so too should every death. Palliative care is critically important, not just for the patient, but for the entire family.
Continuing their long list of broken promises, the Conservatives today presented a budget that will hurt working Canadians and seniors alike. Raising the retirement age to 67 means Canadians will have to wait two more years to get some of their tax money back in the form of OAS.
Conservative mismanagement and short-sightedness is become apparent in the face of a spiraling drug shortage. The Harper government has no Plan B to get thousands of Canadians the medication that they are waiting for, putting their health at risk with.
The Average length for cancer treatment in Canada: nine months. But EI benefits are only provided for 15 weeks for medical treatments. This gap pushes thousands of Canadians into severe debt, sometimes financial ruin every year. MP Olivia Chow is proposing to extend coverage to a year – like other countries.
By 2026, the number of Canadian seniors will double to eight million. These are folks who worked hard, paid their dues, and deserve dignity in their retirement years. So we need to start building capacity in home care and long term care now. We’re already falling behind. Some hospitals now devote a quarter of their [...]

During my university years I was a waitress and came to love serving rainbow trout. Even today I can still remember the sparkling skin and sweet flesh. So when I visited a local farmers’ market recently it was natural for me to wander over to the stall that was selling rainbow trout. Sean Lovell described [...]
As Canada welcomes the G8 and G20 member nations, long overdue attention will be focused on maternal health and decreasing the mortality rates of mothers and infants in developing countries. As we think about mothers abroad, we also need to address the lack of affordable, universal child care here at home.
In preparation for the G8 summit, the Conservative government proposed a maternal health initiative for developing countries. Their incredibly ideological proposal did not allow for family planning and safe access to abortion, important tools that have been proven to save lives. More than 300,000 women around the world die during childbirth or from pregnancy-related complications [...]
