VIA Rail: Chow Demands Reversal of Cuts

NDP Transport Critic Olivia Chow, MP Mike Sullivan Call for Reversal of Devastating Funding Cuts

March 1, 2013

TORONTO – New Democrat Railway Caucus chair Mike Sullivan (York South—Weston) was joined by NDP Transport critic Olivia Chow (Trinity—Spadina) today to call on the Conservatives to reverse reckless and harmful cuts to VIA Rail.

“These cuts just go to show that the Conservatives are willing to continue to cut recklessly without thinking of all the Canadians who rely on VIA Rail to commute and to travel,” said Sullivan. “This isn’t a small cut – they’re slashing nearly $300-million dollars that VIA Rail relies on to provide high quality transport services to Canadians.”

The funding cuts come just after the Conservatives voted against an NDP motion to create a long-term plan that would address Canada’s aging infrastructure, create jobs and provide Canadians with high-quality transportation.

“How can the Conservatives even claim they are concerned with Canada’s economy when so many hard-working Canadians rely on VIA Rail to commute or for business?” said Sullivan.

“Canadian families and business travellers will suffer as more communities will be left without VIA Rail services,” Chow added. “While Amtrak in the US thrives, the federal government is dismantling intercity rail in Canada.”
