National Transit Strategy: Call to Action
With Vote for National Transit Strategy Bill on September 19th, Olivia Appeals to Supporters, MPs
August 31, 2012
TORONTO – Canadians deserve decent public transit. With over-burdened cities and towns struggling to maintain and expand services, MP Olivia Chow is fighting for long-term federal transit funding and the cooperation of all levels of government.
A crucial vote on Bill C-305 on September 19 will decide whether the National Transit Strategy can become a reality – read Olivia’s letter to transit supporters.

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for standing up for public transit by signing the petition in support of the National Transit Strategy. Canadians have been stuck in traffic, waiting for overcrowded buses or coping with no access to transit for too long. That is why my transit Bill C-305 is critically important in getting Canadians fast, accessible, reliable and affordable public transit through long-term federal funding and the cooperation of all levels of government.
Your signature was an important contribution, but now I urgently need your help again. A crucial vote in the House of Commons on Wednesday, September 19th on the second reading of my bill will decide whether the National Transit Strategy can become a reality. I need 13 more votes for the bill to pass second reading.
There are several ways in which I need your support:
Write to your local Member of Parliament and urge him/her to vote in favour of Bill C-305 and send me a copy. Please feel free to use the draft letters provided here: www.nationaltransitstrategy.ca/send-sample-letters-mp/.
To look up your MP and his/her contact information, please visit http://www.parl.gc.ca and simply enter your postal code. If you happen to live in Trinity-Spadina, I encourage you to write to one of the Conservative MPs in the Toronto area.
Please also share this letter with your family and friends to get them to support the National Transit Strategy as well. It would be great if they could sign the petition and send letters, too. Just use the attached petition and send it back to Parliament free of postage. You can download additional petitions here: www.nationaltransitstrategy.ca/support/
I would love to hear from you what other ideas you have to get this important bill passed.
If you are around downtown Toronto on Wednesday, September 12, please join me for a strategy meeting at my Community Office, 144 Augusta Avenue at 7:00 p.m. Give my office a call for details at 416-533-2710.
I look forward to hearing from you and I appreciate your support in getting Canada moving with the National Transit Strategy!
Sincerely,
Olivia Chow, MP (Trinity–Spadina)
Official Opposition Transport and Infrastructure Critic
