Budget: Olivia’s Message from the House Floor

MP Olivia Chow and New Democrat Colleagues Continue to Stand Up Against Disastrous Budget

June 14, 2012

OTTAWA -

Dear friends,

I am writing to you from the House of Commons. We are in the middle of spending over 24 hours voting against the Conservatives Trojan horse budget bill.

The Harper Conservatives are ramming a 425-page bill through Parliament because they don’t want this bill to be properly studied or debated. They don’t want Canadians to find out all the dirty secrets hidden inside a bill that’s supposedly about the budget.

In reality, Bill C-38 will eliminate 43,000 jobs, decimate long established standards for environmental protection, make it harder for unemployed workers to receive Employment Insurance and delay the provision of Old Age Security benefits by two years. This misguided budget will also further diminish our standing in the world through massive cuts to the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Canadian International Development Agency.

70 bills will be negatively impacted or repealed by this act – pieces of legislation that have nothing to do with economic policy or job creation.

Please read my speech in the House of Commons here.

My New Democrat colleagues and I will continue to hold the Harper government to account. Our caucus will continue to fight against their undemocratic and regressive policies that will hurt our environment and our families.

Sincerely,
Olivia Chow
