Ethics and Democracy
The Conservatives are undermining our democracy by muzzling their critics and weakening structures that hold government accountable to citizens.
Stephen Harper was elected on a promise of accountability, but he runs one of the most secretive governments in memory. Whether they’re dodging questions in Parliament or hiding information from Canadians, his Conservatives have already given our democracy a black eye.
Now their Trojan Horse budget will:
- reduce the Auditor General’s powers to hold government accountable to Canadians;
- remove independent oversight from 12 key government agencies—including the Northern Pipeline Agency, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Canada Revenue Agency;
- eliminate organizations that produce independent policy research—including Rights & Democracy, the National Council of Welfare, and the First Nations Statistical Institute;
- dissolve the Public Appointments Commission designed to ensure key positions are assigned based on merit instead of insider connections.
