Transit Strategy: Citizens Voicing Support

Across the Country, Citizens in Support of a National Public Transit Strategy

March 7, 2012

TORONTO – As Official Opposition Transport Critic Olivia Chow continues her push for a national framework for transit funding, citizens are voicing their opinions. No matter where she goes, transit users tell Olivia their stories. Here is what some of them had to say:

“Public transportation is essential for all Canadian cities. Canada is pretty much alone out there in not having a federal support regime. What a shame!”
- Mike Clancy, Toronto, ON

“Having accesible, rapid transit means living the promise of a sustainable future.”
- Joel Melamed, Toronto, ON

“Public transportation is equality. It is a safe, reliable means for my friends and family to reach their city and community. It is a means for equalizing and making our cities an unified community.”
- Kaela Greenstien, Toronto, ON

“Proper public transit means a cleaner environment. But for that we need more frequent trains.”
- Jon Lin, Mississauga, ON

“Public transit is such a great alternative to using a car. It means accessibility. Venturing into areas that you might not normally go to.”
- Drew Smith, Crofton, BC

“A world class city needs to have public transit in order to run efficiently. A major concern is gridlock which causes economic suffering and makes it very difficult to get to places. I believe a national transit strategy would lead to major improvements for everyday life. Finally, it would be a milestone for all of us working together to build public transit.”
- Brian Boehlert, Toronto, ON

“Transit connects me to my community, my city, my region and my country. I use it to visit friends and family. Without adequate transit, my quality of life would be significantly reduced.”
- Smith Miller, Toronto, ON

“I use the public transit system everyday. A modern city needs a constantly improving and reliable transit system. The grid lock of traffic in downtown Toronto is really getting impossible. What used to be a 20 minute trip for me now takes 45+ minutes.”
- Eric Ladelpha, Toronto, ON

“I’ve lived in Toronto for 10 years and have relied heavily on public transit exclusively. I’ve seen the buses and the subway get more crowded in this last decade – and I wish and hope that our politicians understand the importance of funding our transit system rather than leaving people to the mercy of the automobile!”
- Archana Rampure, Toronto ON

“I am dependent for much of my city travel on the TTC. I am disabled – I don’t drive. Every accessible subway station, accessible bus and (in 2013) accessible streetcar increases my freedome to move around the city.”
- Elaine Stewart, Toronto, ON

“Proper infrastructure is vital for any large city and should be supported, improved and brought into the 21st century.”
- Ross Whiteford, Toronto, ON

“I don’t need a car. I believe that the TTC is a solution for everybody! TTC is a solution for the environment. Something that is very important for everybody is to have buses, streetcars, special needs transportation, etc.”
- Silvia Porras, Toronto, ON
