Protection for Iraq War resisters killed by Liberals’ walk out
Canada has a proud history of protecting U.S. soldiers who protest unjust wars. From the Vietnam to Iraq, soldiers who stood up for their values have always able to find a home here.
Thanks to the Liberals, that may soon change.
High-ranking Liberals, including leader Michael Ignatieff, walked out on a vote in Parliament that would have enshrined the protection of Iraq War resisters, and caused it to fail.
The bill was modelled after two of Olivia Chow’s motions — originally supported by the Liberals — which called on Canada to let Iraq War resisters stay.
Olivia is dismayed that so many Toronto Liberals who walked out on this important vote, and disappointed in Ignatieff’s poor leadership. As MPs, it is our job to stand up and vote on behalf of our constituents. These Liberal MPs did not.
This failed vote is a significant setback for Iraq War resisters in Canada. Many of them are in limbo and unable to see their families or live freely.
Olivia Chow and the New Democrats firmly believe that the invasion of Iraq was unjust and that those who refused to participate deserve protection. That’s why Olivia will continue to fight on their behalf until they are allowed to live peacefully in Canada.
