CHOW’S MOTION TO STOP FUNDING CUTS GETS COMMITTEE SUPPORT

The Citizenship and Immigration Committee passed NDP Immigration critic Olivia Chow’s motion urging the government to reverse the $53 million in funding cuts to immigration settlement agencies.

“This is just the first step in reversing that devastating decision,” said Chow. “Now each and every Member of Parliament will have to stand up and show which side they’re on.”

The committee will report the motion to the House of Commons early next week, at which point Chow will move a concurrence motion, which will require the motion be debated and voted on in the House of Commons.

“Many agencies in my riding are still trying to figure out whether and how they’ll be able to cope without funding,” said Parkdale-High Park candidate Peggy Nash. “This NDP action is at least giving them some hope.”

New Democrat candidate for Davenport Andrew Cash agrees. “Here is a prime example of New Democrat MPs standing up for Toronto and getting results,” said Cash. “This is what happens when you have an MP who works for you.”

“Without funding, many agencies will be forced to shut their doors, lay off their workers and their valuable services will be lost,” said Chow. “Faster integration to their communities means better job opportunities for newcomers. It’s good for the economy, and it is good for Canada’s productivity.”
