Healthy Food = Healthy Children
Numerous studies have shown that the number of obese children is steadily increasing. Olivia has repeatedly called on the government to implement a national childhood nutrition policy that would provide at least one healthy meal to all children under 18 every day. Last month Olivia spoke to a conference on public health and nutrition which was presented by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest with child nutrition and general health experts.
Everyone agreed on the importance of concrete action to reform government nutrition policy in partnership with local communities. Canada is one of a dwindling number of G20 countries which still do not have a national mandate, funding policy, coordination or evaluation of student nutrition programs. Countries like the U.S., Finland, Sweden, Italy and Japan have all taken steps to ensure that children get at least one healthy meal per day. It’s Canada’s turn to take action. Study after study has shown that children from homes without adequate nutrition have poorer overall health than other children from similar backgrounds. They also get sick and are hospitalized more frequently. They miss more days of school and are far less likely to be able to learn when they do attend classes.
It’s high time that the Canadian government make our children’s health a priority.
