Auditor General: Citizenship and Immigration Canada gets a Failing Grade

October 26, 2010

OTTAWA – Today’s Auditor General’s report revealed that Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has failed to set a comprehensive set of standards for service delivery.

‪“The Auditor General’s report confirms what Canadians already know – the Conservative government delivers lousy second-rate service to immigrants,” said New Democrat Immigration critic Olivia Chow (Trinity-Spadina). “Some Canadians wait six years to be united with their parents, and decisions to reject visitor visas are arbitrary and opaque. With no standards, there is no efficiency and no accountability on effectiveness.”

‪In the report, the Auditor General noted that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSD) have taken appropriate measures to manage service delivery but that CIC is “still working” to develop similar practices.

“The Auditor General’s report provides further evidence that the Minister is neglecting his portfolio. Instead of simply changing laws, he needs to implement them effectively,” said Chow.

‪New Democrats have shown leadership with a comprehensive immigration strategy that would ensure fast and fair immigration service.
