Grandpa Jack and high quality child care
Speaking of family, I was able to spend some time this past summer in Temagami with Jack and baby Beatrice.
After waiting for almost 2 years, my step daughter Sarah finally got a space for Beatrice at an excellent downtown, non-profit, school based, child care centre. But the wait should not have to be so long, and the fees so high.
Throughout the summer, I visited many child care centres across the country and listened to the deep frustration of parents on waiting lists, workers who get paid very little, and students who are in training and eager to educate and serve our children. It is heartbreaking to learn that two of the three child care centres in Yellowknife have had to close their doors due in part, to a lack of funding. However, it is exciting to see many provincial governments starting to incorporate early learning and child care into their public school system. I am as committed as ever to establish a law that will provide a legislative framework for high quality, universally accessible, affordable and non-profit early childhood learning and care service to all of our children: http://www2.parl.gc.ca/Sites/LOP/LEGISINFO/index.asp?Language=E&query=6809&Session=23&List=toc
