Government refuses to compensate for damages caused by G20
The following is an excerpt from a letter from the Summits Management Office, indicating that the Government will not provide compensation for damages caused by the G20 Summit:
As you are aware, there is the opportunity to apply for an ex-gratia payment related to financial loss as a result of the extraordinary security measures for the SUmmit. The Guidelines for payment and the forms can be found on the website: www.g20.gc.ca.
However, if there are losses or damages caused by third parties, including vandalism, payment will not be provided for such losses or damages under this program. These types of damages are insurable under normal insurance coverage. I refer you to Section 8 (c) of the guidelines.
“According to Section 8-(c) of the guidelines, the following claims shall not be considered eligible for Payment:
i) damages caused by third parties, including vandalism;
ii) damages for personal injury (bodily harm);
iii) damages for emotional distress; and,
iv) amounts that can be paid out by means of another instrument, such as statutory or regulatory scheme, Treasury Board policy, program, grant or contribution;
v) private protection measures.
