Island Airport Expansion
Despite frequent noise and pollution complaints from waterfront residents, the Toronto Port Authority (TPA) is pushing ahead with plans to expand the Island Airport. The Toronto Port Authority wants to link Toronto to the island airport by constructing a tunnel under a portion of Lake Ontario. Such a tunnel would enable the airport to increase its air traffic dramatically, as the TPA pushes to expand the number of commercial airline carriers at the airport.
The budget implementation bill, if passed, would remove the requirement for environmental assessments for projects that receive federal funding. This environmental assessment exemption means Torontonians will be shut out of the consultations because there will not be a federal environmental assessment on the impact this tunnel will have on the quality of our water and air.
This tunnel and airline expansion will have a dramatic impact on the quality of life of the local residents, and the children at the nearby schools and community centres. Olivia Chow is committed to continuing the fight against the Island Airport expansion.
