Latest patronage appointments to Toronto Port Authority are unacceptable

TORONTO – Toronto New Democrat MP Olivia Chow (Trinity-Spadina) condemns the latest appointments to the Toronto Port Authority.

“John Baird threw out Henley and Reid, two perfectly capable directors who dared to ask tough questions,” said Chow. “The Federal Conservatives are clearly afraid of good governance and democracy,” said Chow.

Chow made her comments after TPA Directors Douglas Reid and Christopher Henley, who were critical of the relationship between the TPA and Porter Air, were replaced by Robert Poirier, a top Conservative fundraiser since 2005, and A. Mark Curry.

“Board members are supposed to represent the public interest, not partisan interests. The two Board members booted out by Baird were asking tough questions about the former CEO’s expenses and corporate good governance practices,” said Chow.

“I introduced a bill in Parliament to return control of the Toronto Port Authority to the people of Toronto,” said Chow. “Our tax dollars should not support an agency that is stacking its ranks with Conservative cronies.”
